Child Protection Week is extremely important at Ethekwini Primary School because we value our pupils’ safety and well-being. Recently, students in Grades 4 and 6 participated in a thorough child protection awareness program designed to provide them with critical knowledge and assistance. We addressed crucial issues such as rape, bullying, human trafficking, and substance misuse with the help of numerous partners. This blog post dives into the thought-provoking sessions and useful tools made available to our young learners.

Students’ Empowerment through Awareness

Ethekwini Primary School invited important partners to the child protection awareness event, including the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Lifeline, the Department of Social Development, and the Ethekwini municipality. Rape was a key focus of the awareness program, with the goal of dispelling myths and providing learners with critical knowledge on where, how, who, and why to report such instances. The center, which is located in Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, is open 24 hours a day, even on holidays, and provides a broad variety of services such as police aid, medical support, and safe houses if necessary. A remarkable musical performance by the renowned KZN Philharmonic Orchestra was recently presented at the Ekhaya Multi-Art Centre. Students in grades 3 and 4 from Ethekwini Primary School were given the opportunity to attend this mesmerizing concert and become engrossed in the sweet sounds created by various instruments. Both kids and teachers agreed that the concert was an extraordinary experience that left a lasting impression.

Investigating the Musical World

The pupils were exposed to a wide variety of musical instruments from many families throughout the enthralling 30-minute event. The String Family produced melodic compositions that resounded throughout the entire auditorium while showcasing the elegance of the violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The French horn and trumpet in the Brass Family offered a regal touch, while the flute, piccolo, and bassoon in the Woodwind Family presented lovely melodies. The concert was energized and rhythmically enhanced by the percussion instruments, notably the drum set, which brought the entire orchestra to life.

In charge of the Symphony

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by one lucky student from each grade, which was a highlight of the occasion. The chosen conductors’ faces showed the excitement and joy they were experiencing as they led the musicians through their performance. The Chemical Industries Education & Training Authority, in cooperation with AlgoAtWork Robotics Academy, and Ethekwini Primary School, proudly staged a ground-breaking robotics and coding launch event. The purpose of the program was to introduce 80 eager students from Ethekwini Primary School and affiliated schools to the fascinating world of coding and robotics. With the help of this program, students will now be equipped with crucial skills for the future.

Collaboration and Partnership:

Ethekwini Primary School participated in the robotics and coding launch event along with Phumelela Primary, Silimela Primary, Phakama Primary, and Thandukwazi Primary. By bringing together students from various backgrounds, this collaborative initiative produced a special learning environment that encouraged interaction and knowledge sharing. Furthermore, KwaMashu SuperSpar donated refreshments for the launch event and that was a cherry on top to the successful event.

Menstrual hygiene education:

In terms of young girls’ general wellbeing and confidence, menstrual hygiene is vital. Ethekwini Primary School Leads the Way in KwaMashu with Coding and Robotics Subject

Ethekwini Primary School in KwaMashu has taken a bold step by launching the coding and robotics subject, becoming the first school in the area to offer this exciting new subject. The subject was launched on April 24, 2023, and is currently being piloted with 30 enthusiastic Grade 6 learners.

The subject is taught for an hour outside of the main timetable twice a week, with a team of dedicated educators committed to expanding the rollout of the subject in 2024. The team consists of Ms. Thango, Ms. Khumalo, Ms. Zulu, Ms. Khumalo, and Mr. Mkhize, all of whom are passionate about teaching the subject and ensuring that learners have a solid foundation in coding and robotics.

What we wish to achieve?

At Ethekwini Primary School, we believe that it is essential for learners to be equipped with the necessary skills for the future. We understand that the world is becoming increasingly digital, and we want our learners to be ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges that come with it.

Through the coding and robotics subject, our learners are not only gaining technical skills but also developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. These skills are crucial for success in the 21st century workplace, and we are proud to be at the forefront of providing our learners with a solid foundation in these areas.
